Installation Projects > Book of Rememberance, 2010

1

In May 2010, we installed an audio art work in the Shaw/Givens school in west Toronto as part of the artist intervention project "Art School (Dismissed)". This work, The Book of Remembrance, features a heavily treated audio recording of a young boy reciting the names of the soldiers from the 123rd and 208th Battalions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force who died in World War I – the soldiers who were stationed in this very school before being shipped overseas to fight in the war. We treated the audio in such a way as to produce a low rumble that was felt within the body of the viewer, standing in the darkened room of our installation, bringing the memory of the soldiers’ back to life in the location of their temporary billet in 1916.
